Can You Really Spot 41 Leopards On This Kumana Safari?

According to the latest research by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Kumana national park Sri Lanka holds the world’s second-highest leopard density in. The study identified 44 females and 45 males by November 2025, meaning there are roughly 41 leopards per 100 square kilometers. This makes a Kumana safari your best bet for seeing these predators in the wild.

What else can you see in Kumana National Park?

Kumana isn’t just about elephants and leopards; it’s a true wildlife haven. One of the rare highlights here is the rare black-necked stork, with fewer than 50 individuals in all of Sri Lanka, mostly found around Kumana and Yala. Beyond that, you’ll come across crocodiles, water buffalo, golden jackals, wild boars, and even the elusive sloth bear. Known as a historic bird sanctuary, Kumana is home to over 255 bird species, including herons and egrets; making it an absolute paradise for bird lovers.

Will You Find The Peace That A Yala West Safari Lacks?

Most travelers realize too late that the east coast offers a superior connection to nature. Whether you are looking for a quick half-day session tour or a long quiet photography session near the kudumbigala monastery safari site, this journey delivers. It is simply the best safari Arugam Bay has to offer for those who value silence and high-density wildlife sightings.

What Our Guests Say

4.9/5 from 8 reviews

We had two fantastic safaris with our kids! On the half-day safari, we saw a leopard, a family of bathing elephants, crocodiles, rare birds, a wild boar, lots of elephants, buffalo, and many other animals. The waterholes were especially beautiful! The boat safari in the lagoons was uniquely beautiful – especially watching the elephants and buffalo bathing in the morning light. We were the only tourist boat, so it was very exclusive. Highly recommended!!

We had a wonderful experience with Rishi visiting Kumana national park. Rishi and our driver where very skilled and experienced. And because of their patience and knowledge we came across the Leopard and Sloth Bear. Great experience. We also visited Minneriya National Park and the advantage of Kumana over Minneriya it is not that crowded. We went in with just 10 jeeps. Quite the opposite of Minneriya where we went in with more than 100 jeeps. Kumana NP and Arugam Bay Agenda are the choices when you visit Arugam Bay…..

Hanas is really knowledgable about the national parks in Sri Lanka. I went on two safaris in Kumana with his company. As someone who has been on a lot of safari drives in other countries I really appreciated the driver’s spotting, allowing time for photos and being quick to react which meant i got to see a sloth bear in the wild! Personally i preferred kumana over yala. Arugambay Agenda was also available to set up taxi transfers between hotels for me, islandwide.

Yesterday we went on a safari and were lucky enough to see leopards, elephants and a wide range of birds. The wildlife experience itself was genuinely amazing. The guides were knowledgeable, calm and very respectful of the animals. What stood out most was how excited they were to see the wildlife alongside us. It felt authentic, not staged or rushed. The only downside was the ride itself. The safari vehicle was extremely bumpy and uncomfortable, which did take a bit away from the experience at times.

We had a fantastic half day afternoon safari at Kumana with Rishi as our guide. He was very welcoming and funny and provided us with a drink & snacks. He had lots of knowledge about the animals and was very patient and thorough when trying to find as many animals as possible, even looking for elephants with his torch on the journey back. We had an amazing afternoon & we were so thrilled to see a leopard sleeping, what an incredible experience!! I would highly recommend this company.
