Full Description

Tired of the jeep traffic in Yala national park Sri Lanka?

Forget the bumper-to-bumper crowds. This Sri Lanka wildlife safari takes you deep into Kumana national park, a place where leopards and bears actually have room to roam. Adding this to your Arugambay agenda ensures a much more intimate encounter with the wild compared to the busy Yala park Sri Lanka. It’s the perfect choice for those who want a raw, authentic Sri Lanka wildlife safari experience on the east coast.

Why is this the best Kumana national park safari for sightings?

What makes our Arugam bay tours different is the prestige of Arugambay Agenda, led by our chief guide Rishi, whose deep expertise reveals the park’s secrets. From the “Kirigalbe sand dunes safari area to the world-class bird watching center in “Kumana villu” through the “Kumbukkan Oya”, we cover the spots most tourists miss. We even manage your Kumana national park tickets, making this one of the most seamless safaris in Sri Lanka. You’ll explore an untouched elephant sanctuary near Arugam bay while learning about the unique ecology of Kumana national Park Sri Lanka.

Can you really spot 41 leopards on this Kumana safari?

According to the latest research by the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Kumana national park Sri Lanka holds the world’s second-highest leopard density in. The study identified 44 females and 45 males by November 2025, meaning there are roughly 41 leopards per 100 square kilometers. This makes a Kumana safari your best bet for seeing these predators in the wild.

What else can you see in Kumana national park?

Kumana isn’t just about elephants and leopards; it’s a true wildlife haven. One of the rare highlights here is the rare black-necked stork, with fewer than 50 individuals in all of Sri Lanka, mostly found around Kumana and Yala. Beyond that, you’ll come across crocodiles, water buffalo, golden jackals, wild boars, and even the elusive sloth bear. Known as a historic bird sanctuary, Kumana is home to over 255 bird species, including herons and egrets; making it an absolute paradise for bird lovers.

When is the best time for a Kumana safari from Arugam Bay?

Timing shapes everything. Kumana national park is at its finest from around February to September, when dry weather draws leopards, elephants, and sloth bears to shrinking waterholes and makes sightings far easier. For birdwatchers, April to July is unmatched, as thousands of migratory birds arrive to nest in the Kumana villu wetlands. The northeast monsoon (roughly October to January) can flood the tracks, so we always confirm park conditions and help you plan your kumana safari from Arugam Bay for the ideal window.

Will you find the peace that a Yala west safari lacks?

Most travelers realize too late that the east coast offers a superior connection to nature. Whether you are looking for a quick half-day session tour or a long quiet photography session near the kudumbigala monastery safari site, this journey delivers. It is simply the best safari Arugam Bay has to offer for those who value silence and high-density wildlife sightings.

+

+

Which Kumana national park safari packages are available?

+

How do I access the Kumana safari entrance?

The main entrance for your Kumana safari is via Panama, a village near Arugam Bay. You will enter through the official Kumana Gate, where all tickets, security, and guide checks are processed before you head into the wilderness.

+

Should I choose the morning or afternoon Kumana safari?

Both are excellent, so it comes down to what you want to see. The morning session is cooler and quieter, and often best for leopards and sloth bears active before the heat. The afternoon session tends to reward you with elephants coming out to graze and bathe, plus softer golden light for photos. As this is a private tour, we happily tailor either one — and Rishi can steer you toward the session with the strongest recent sightings.

+

How far is Kumana national park from Arugam Bay?

Kumana sits roughly an hour's drive south of Arugam Bay, heading down through the village of Panama to the park's only official gate. The good news is the wildlife often starts before you arrive — the fields and wetlands around Panama are alive with elephants, buffalo, and crocodiles. With hotel pickup and drop-off included, you never have to worry about the route.

+

What makes Kumana national park unique?

Once known as "Yala East," Kumana spans over 35,000 hectares in Sri Lanka's Ampara district and reopened in 2003 after years of closure during the civil war — a big reason it still feels so untouched. At its heart is the Kumana villu, a flooded wetland fed by the Kumbukkan Oya that ranks among the island's oldest bird sanctuaries.

What Our Guests Say

4.9/5 from 10 reviews

We did a private safari at Kumana National Park, and it was such a great experience. We explored the park with the private jeep and got to see so much wildlife; elephants, buffaloes, sloth bears, wild boars, golden jackals, crocodiles, and lots of beautiful bird species. We were hoping to spot a leopard, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen this time. However, the highlight came on our way back when we saw an incredible gathering of around 80 elephants in the rice fields during the harvest season. The guide told us that, this is a normal gathering during July and August. Watching them in that beautiful landscape was an unforgettable moment. Definitely a safari experience worth doing!

Amazing experience!! We already did a safari in Yala National Park, but this safari in Kumana National Park was something else. The pre-tour communication with Hanas was smooth and informative. Our guide was excellent. He speaks excellent English and is very knowledgeable. We saw almost all the wildlife in Kumana, such as elephants, crocodiles, jackals, deer, wild boars, lots of birds, and even 03 leopards on our half-day tour. We were picked up from our hotel in Arugam Bay on time. Wonderful experience and one of the must-do activities in Sri Lanka.

Bedankt 🫶🏻 …

We had two fantastic safaris with our kids! On the half-day safari, we saw a leopard, a family of bathing elephants, crocodiles, rare birds, a wild boar, lots of elephants, buffalo, and many other animals. The waterholes were especially beautiful! The boat safari in the lagoons was uniquely beautiful – especially watching the elephants and buffalo bathing in the morning light. We were the only tourist boat, so it was very exclusive. Highly recommended!!

We had a wonderful experience with Rishi visiting Kumana national park. Rishi and our driver where very skilled and experienced. And because of their patience and knowledge we came across the Leopard and Sloth Bear. Great experience. We also visited Minneriya National Park and the advantage of Kumana over Minneriya it is not that crowded. We went in with just 10 jeeps. Quite the opposite of Minneriya where we went in with more than 100 jeeps. Kumana NP and Arugam Bay Agenda are the choices when you visit Arugam Bay…..

Hanas is really knowledgable about the national parks in Sri Lanka. I went on two safaris in Kumana with his company. As someone who has been on a lot of safari drives in other countries I really appreciated the driver’s spotting, allowing time for photos and being quick to react which meant i got to see a sloth bear in the wild! Personally i preferred kumana over yala. Arugambay Agenda was also available to set up taxi transfers between hotels for me, islandwide.

Yesterday we went on a safari and were lucky enough to see leopards, elephants and a wide range of birds. The wildlife experience itself was genuinely amazing. The guides were knowledgeable, calm and very respectful of the animals. What stood out most was how excited they were to see the wildlife alongside us. It felt authentic, not staged or rushed. The only downside was the ride itself. The safari vehicle was extremely bumpy and uncomfortable, which did take a bit away from the experience at times.

We had a fantastic half day afternoon safari at Kumana with Rishi as our guide. He was very welcoming and funny and provided us with a drink & snacks. He had lots of knowledge about the animals and was very patient and thorough when trying to find as many animals as possible, even looking for elephants with his torch on the journey back. We had an amazing afternoon & we were so thrilled to see a leopard sleeping, what an incredible experience!! I would highly recommend this company.

Most amazing with Rishi, we had the best tour. Definitely couldn’t recommend the team anymore for your tour to the National Park in Arugam Bay.
